Driftwood & Sand is Hokitika’s iconic sand sculpting festival and competition — a celebration of creativity, community, and the wild beauty of New Zealand’s West Coast. Each summer, artists, families, and free-spirited makers gather on Hokitika Beach to transform piles of driftwood and sand into extraordinary sculptures. From whimsical creatures to towering designs, every creation reflects the Coast’s untamed spirit and the talent of those who call it home.
A BIT OF HISTORY
The event began in 2002 as a community project to bring people together on the beach and make the most of Hokitika’s natural treasures: endless sand and a shoreline littered with driftwood, stones and beach debris. Over the years it has grown into a much-loved annual tradition, drawing locals and visitors alike. Many long-time participants return year after year, making Driftwood & Sand a living part of Hokitika’s exciting summer story.
Who's Behind It?
Driftwood & Sand is proudly run by the local community, with support from various organisations and businesses, and a host of dedicated workers and volunteers. Sculptors range from professional artists to groups of friends, families, and anyone keen to get sandy hands. Together, they create an event that is as much about connection as it is about art.
